Overview

What is a terms and conditions checkbox?

A terms and conditions checkbox is a box in your cart that a shopper ticks to agree to your terms before they check out.

Agreely adds that box to your cart page and cart drawer. The checkout button stays off until the shopper ticks it, and a checkout rule stops Buy it now, Shop Pay and direct checkout links from skipping it.

Every order records which version of your text the shopper agreed to and when, and the app keeps every version. You link your own policies, write the text in each store language, add up to 5 checkboxes for chosen products or countries, and go live with one switch in your theme editor.

  1. Hard to skip

The box is never ticked for the shopper, and the checkout rule covers the buttons that go around the cart.

  2. A record on the order

The text version and the time, saved with the order under Additional details.

  3. Yours to word

Your text, your policy links, your languages and your design.

Features

What the terms checkbox does in your cart and at checkout

  • A checkbox shoppers cannot skip

Agreely puts the box above or below the checkout button in your cart page and cart drawer. The checkout and express buttons stay off until the shopper ticks it, and the box is never ticked for them. If they press checkout without it, they see your message.

  • Checkout rule against skipping

Buy it now, Shop Pay, Apple Pay and direct checkout links go around the cart, so a checkout rule asks for agreement in Shopify’s checkout too. A shopper who skipped the box sees your message there and goes back to the cart to tick it. You can switch the rule off in Settings.

  • Proof saved on every order

When a shopper ticks the box, the order records the checkbox name, the version of your text and the date and time. You find it under Additional details as “Agreed to terms”. The time comes from the shopper’s device.

  • Every version of your text kept

Change your text and Agreely starts a new version, and keeps the old ones with the dates each was live. The Proof of agreement page lists them all, shows the text in each language, and copies any version as plain text.

  • Links to your own policies

Write {terms_of_service}, {refund_policy}, {privacy_policy} or {shipping_policy} in your text and each becomes a link to your own policy page, read in a popup without leaving the cart. Add up to 5 links of your own, which open in a new tab.

  • Up to 5 checkboxes, by product or country

Name each checkbox and write up to 500 characters of text. Ask for agreement on any product, or only when the cart has chosen products or collections. Ask shoppers in every country, or only in the countries you pick.

  • Your text in every store language

Write the text and the “please agree” message for each language your store publishes. A language without your own text uses your main language, and the built-in text and message come already translated.

  • 6 designs and your own colors

Start from Clean, Boxed, Soft, Bold, Minimal or Midnight. Then change the box shape, background, text size, colors and corner radius, and choose whether the box shakes when a shopper skips it.

  • Live with one switch

Open the theme editor from the app and the Agreely app embed is already switched on. Save, and the box shows in your cart page and cart drawer. To place it in an exact spot, add the Terms checkbox block instead.

How it works

How to add a terms and conditions checkbox to Shopify

Three steps. Switch it on, check the words, then see it in your cart.

  1. Step 1 of 3

Choose the plan and switch it on in your theme

The setup guide opens the theme editor with Agreely already on.

    1. Install Agreely and choose the Standard plan.
    2. Press Open theme editor in the setup guide.
    3. Check that the Agreely terms checkbox app embed is on, then save.
  2. Step 2 of 3

Write your text and link your policies

Your store starts with one checkbox called Terms of sale.

    1. Keep the built-in text, or write your own with links to your policy pages.
    2. Choose any product or chosen ones, and every country or chosen ones.
    3. Add text for each store language, and pick a design.
  3. Step 3 of 3

    Check it in your cart

See what shoppers see before you tell anyone.

    1. Add a product to your cart and open the cart page or cart drawer.
    2. Press checkout without ticking the box to see your message.
    3. Tick the box, place a test order and look for “Agreed to terms” under Additional details.

FAQ

Terms and conditions checkbox questions

What merchants ask before adding an agree to terms checkbox to their Shopify cart.

Install Agreely and pick the Standard plan. In the setup guide, press Open theme editor: the Agreely app embed opens already switched on, and you press Save. The checkbox then shows in your cart page and cart drawer with the text “I agree to the Terms of service and Refund policy”, linked to your own policy pages. Change the words in the app whenever you like. The embed is a theme feature, so your theme needs to support app embeds (Online Store 2.0 themes do).

Not while the checkout rule is on, and it is on by default. Buy it now, Shop Pay, Apple Pay and direct checkout links all skip the cart, so Agreely adds a rule in Shopify’s checkout. A shopper who has not agreed sees your message and goes back to the cart to tick the box. Checkout itself cannot show a checkbox, except on Shopify Plus, where you can also add the Agreely block in the checkout editor.

Yes. Agreely shows the same box in the cart page and in the cart drawer, next to every checkout button, and keeps the checkout and express buttons off until the shopper ticks it. If you want the box in an exact spot, add the Terms checkbox block in the theme editor and Agreely leaves that spot to it.

On the order. Open it in Orders and look under Additional details for “Agreed to terms”, which shows the checkbox name, the version of your text and the date and time in UTC. The Proof of agreement page in the app shows what each version said. The time comes from the shopper’s device, and the order’s own date is Shopify’s.

A change to the text starts a new version, and the old versions stay in the app with the dates they were live. Shoppers who ticked the old text tick again. Orders keep the version number they were placed with, so you can always see what that shopper agreed to.

Yes. Put {terms_of_service}, {refund_policy}, {privacy_policy} or {shipping_policy} in the text and each becomes a link to the policy page in your store settings. Shoppers read it in a popup without leaving the cart. A policy you have not written shows as plain words, not a broken link. You can also add up to 5 links of your own, which open in a new tab.

Yes, with up to 5 checkboxes. For each one choose any product, or only carts with chosen products (up to 100) or collections (up to 20), and choose every country or only the countries you pick. The country is the one the shopper shops in, as set by your markets.

Yes. Write the checkbox text and the “please agree” message for each language your store publishes. A language without your own text uses your main language. If you keep the built-in text, it is already translated for your shoppers.

No. When a shopper ticks the box, their browser saves the agreement in your store’s cart through Shopify, and Shopify copies it to the order. Nothing reaches Agreely’s servers, and the app sets no cookies on your storefront.

One plan, Standard, at $1.99/month, or $19.99/year with annual billing (a 16% saving), billed in USD, with every feature included. There is no free plan or free trial. Without an active plan, the checkbox does not show on your store and the checkout rule is off.
